A foosball table is a great addition to a game room or basement due to its durability, relatively compact size and wide availability. Foosball tables come in a variety of sizes, quality levels and thus price points from children’s tables all the way up to tournament size tables and other mid range options in between.
While it requires about the same space as a bubble hockey table, a foosball table will require less space than a standard pool table or air hockey game. A typical foosball table will measure 56″ L X 30″ W X 36″ H and can weigh around 120 lbs. although tournament quality tables may weigh as much as 230 lbs. A table of this size will typically require a room size of around 9′ x 6′ and has an actual playing surface of about 47″ x 27″.
Foosball Table Dimensions
Here is a comparison of popular table sizes, the dimensions, the weight and the room size you’ll need to fit it in. Remember: Foosball involves pulling rods inwards and outwards to control your players which increases the space needed on both sides. You should measure your room yourself and take into consideration the size of the people who will typically be playing ie. Small kids? Large adults? All of the above?
Add about 13″ – 18″ to your chosen table size for the rods to be extended but also another 2′ or so for each player to stand freely to be safe.
Table | Dimensions | Weight | Room Size |
Regulation table for home or commercial use | 56″ L x 30″ W x 36″ H | 195 lbs – 235 lbs | Minimum 9′ x 6′ room. This size meets official tournament rules and tends to be heavier than cheaper tables. |
60″ home or commercial use | 60″ L x 42″ W x 37″ H | 200 lbs – 210 lbs | Minimum 9′ x 6′ required. Larger than the regulation table. Certain manufacturers produce this table which is longer, much wider and slightly higher than a 56″ one. |
56″ home use | 56″ L x 30″ W x 34.5″ H | 60 lbs – 75 lbs | 9′ x 6′ room required. Good for kids and adults. A table to grow with. Cheaper and lighter than tournament tables. |
48″ home use | 48″ L x 24″ W x 32″ H | 40 lbs – 50 lbs | 8′ x 6′ room required. Good for kids and families. |
Tabletop | 27″ x 14″ x 3″ | 10 lbs | Room size not relevant as it sits on a table. Mini version for kids, families and kids at heart. |
Foosball Table Buying Tips
- Buy a table that you can ideally try out in person to get a sense as to how sturdy it is. Foosball players tend to slam the rods in with authority which can loosen and damage the legs and structure of a cheap table.
- Consider who will play the game. If it’s fun for the family, you may not want to spend as much as if you plan on having friends over for competitive play.
- The strongest tables are made of wood. The next strongest are made of composite. The least strongest tables are made of particle board.
- Choose a table with hollow metal rods, not plastic. Hollow rods are lighter and play faster.
- A standard foosball table measuring 56″ L x 30″ W (height may vary slightly) will suit most owners. Keep in mind this is the table size and doesn’t include the extra space needed to extend the rods while playing.
- While a 7′ – 8′ room may suffice, measure your room and lay out where you’d put the foosball table before buying. A 9′ x 6′ room is ideal.
- Foosball games can weigh over 100 lbs so moving them is usually a two-person job.
- Look for games that have counterweighted players (players are equally heavy at the top and bottom). Turn each handle on the table and let go of the handle. The player should stay in place and shouldn’t rotate or drop down on its own, thus blocking shots and getting in your way.
Foosball Table Regulation Size
The International Table Soccer Federation (ITSF) is the body that administers and regulates foosball AKA table soccer. They have stated that the regulation table for foosball tournaments should measure 56″ L x 30″ W x 36″ H. The ITSF currently recognizes certain tables by the following manufacturers as being tournament recognized:
- Bonzini
- Leonhart
- Garlando
- Roberto Sport
- Tornado
Check out the ITSF Official Partners page to view a current list of authorized tournament tables.
Conclusion
- While you might be able to get away with a smaller size room, a room that is at least 9′ x 6′ will fit a standard foosball table and give four players enough room to stand at the table comfortably.
- Consider who will be playing the game to determine how much you will need to spend to get a foosball table that meets your needs.
- A solid, good quality foosball is ideal regardless because of the stress put on the table given how quickly the game plays and how people tend to use force to pull and push the rods while playing.
